What is Nia?

Through Nia, you’ll experience the expressiveness and grace of dance, the mindful power and explosiveness of martial arts, and the wisdom that comes from sensation through the healing arts. Modern dance movements are mixed with heart-pumping karate kicks and subtle therapeutic suggestions and visualization techniques help you develop awareness and heighten sensation.

Nia movements are simple and repetitive. Repetition of movement helps the body relax giving it a chance to pay attention to details such as position of the feet, hands, or head in a movement sequence.

Where does Nia come from?

In 1983, at the height of the “no-pain no-gain” fitness mentality, Carlos Rosas and Debbie Rosas, both successful fitness instructors, began to question the traditional models for exercise and began to craft a more holistic way of being healthy in one’s body. They incorporated Mindfulness, The Joy of Movement, Comfort, Passion, and Pleasure into their lives and their workout as the new way to feel and create both fitness and well-being. They discovered that getting fit and healthy through pleasure is the way to heal and is the key to health.

From their discoveries a new lifestyle and fitness practice was born—Nia—which offers a new perspective on how to get fit and be healthy while embracing individual creativity and self-empowerment.

“At the height of the Jane Fonda era, when aerobics meant high-impact and bouncing, we had an idea and vision. We knew fitness could feel better and be experienced in a more holistic and effective way. We said, Love is the way to create a healthy body; Choose pleasure over pain; Take off your shoes, feel your body, express yourself and make conscious choices that support healing, transformation, health, well being, and personal growth. Fall in love with your body. Become conscious of what you do as a way to heal and enjoy life.” Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas.

Nia’s ground-breaking work is now recognized as one of the most innovative and safe cardiovascular programs to date. Nia is a pioneer in the health and fitness world, and offers the very best in body-mind training, programs, and on-going education.

What makes Nia unique?

Nia movement is based on the natural design, intelligence and function of the body, what we call, “The Body’s Way.” Nia presents an entirely new philosophy of exercise: whole-body, expressive movement. Nia’s barefoot, non-impact approach maximizes body efficiency and empowers you to move with awareness and ease, in a gentler, yet invigorating way.

Nia involves a variety of movement speeds and styles, ranges of motion, and energy dynamics; it utilizes a variety of combinations of patterns, as well as freestyle movement, designed to train your body, mind, emotions, and spirit to
stimulate creativity, break movement habits, and reveal your maximum movement potential.

The foundation of Nia is the Pleasure Principle; if it feels good, keep doing it; if it hurts, stop! When the body feels good, accepted and loved, it will naturally become
stronger and heal. Nia offers only gain and dissolves pain. It is a creative and dynamic approach to fitness, wellness and personal growth.

In Swahili, “Nia” means “with purpose,” which is exactly the way we teach you to move. We say it’s a lot like chocolate…you have to taste it to fully appreciate the experience.
