Jenn Hicks is a Personal Trainer Size and Inclusive Fitness Specialist who has taught dance fitness classes for the past 17 years. She was named NOW Magazine’s Best Virtual Fitness Instructor for 2020. Jenn customizes routines for every class and helps attendees modify steps or movements whenever they need a little extra care.
Jenn values and teaches body positive fitness classes that follow HAES principles and is actively learning how to incorporate an anti-oppression and trauma informed lens into her teaching. Jenn has worked with neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals including people with eating disorders, body dysmorphia, brain trauma, and memory issues such as dementia. As part of a research study with The Royal Conservatory Living Through The Arts program, in partnership with Baycrest, Jenn and the clinicians found that embodied movement was a complementary addition to a health care regimen for aging adults with a range of abilities including Parkinson’s Disease, respiratory difficulties, and issues with balance.
These classes are beneficial for increasing range of motion and stamina, building cardio and flexibility, balancing your nervous system, and decreasing stress and anxiety. They build body awareness and self-acceptance by focusing on feeling good while moving your body in ways your body was meant to move.
About Dance Fitness
My fullest concentration of energy is available to me only when I integrate all the parts of who I am, openly, allowing power from particular sources of my living to flow back and forth freely through all my different selves, without the restrictions of externally imposed definition. Only then can I bring myself and my energies as a whole to the service of those struggles which I embrace as part of my living.
—Audre Lorde
Gentle Dance Fitness
A modified version of Dance Fitness, Gentle Dance Fitness uses easy to follow movements to build strength and flexibility while conditioning your body. It’s is perfect for people with mobility restrictions or for individuals who want the support of being seated throughout the class.
...even though I am a ‘skinny’ ex ballerina, who definitely stopped dancing at 44 due to pain, I have found joy in movement yet again, and soooooo get body issues, which are largely created in exercise or disciplines like ballet. There is such healing balm in being able to move, in a different, new to my body way. It is difficult to express it in words, and much easier just to dance it out on the floor, barefoot. ~ Lizl Pretorius, Cape Town South Africa
