Could you share a little about yourself? (e.g., hobbies, interests, or what you do outside of class).
My name is Tessie, and I’m in my 60s. I work part-time at No Frills, so I’m on my feet a lot during the day. When I’m not working, I enjoy knitting; it’s something I’ve done for years and find very relaxing, I guess that’s because I used to do it with my grandmother. So it’s got good memories attached to it. It’s also really nice to create something with my hands and see it come together. For the last couple of years I’ve been making hats and scarves and donating them to Streetknit Toronto – they donate them to those in need of warmth in the wintertime.
What first brought you to Dance Fitness classes?
I was looking for a low-impact fitness class because I needed something that wouldn’t be too hard on my joints but would still keep me active. I’ve always felt like I should be moving more, but I didn’t know where to start. When I found Dance Fitness, it felt like a perfect fit.
How did you feel before your first class? Nervous, excited, unsure?
I was definitely nervous. I’m naturally a bit shy, so walking into a class where I didn’t know anyone was intimidating. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to keep up with the moves or if it would feel awkward. I definitely didn’t want people watching me, so I stood in the back.
Have you had previous experience with dance or fitness classes, or is this a new venture for you?
This was completely new for me! I’ve never taken a dance or fitness class before. Most of my activity has just been from walking or doing things around the house and at work.
What challenges have you faced during the classes, and how did you overcome them?
In the beginning, I struggled with remembering the moves and keeping up. But I realized that it didn’t matter if I got everything perfect. Jenn is so encouraging and reminds us to move in the ways that make sense and feel good to us individually. I’ve learned to just enjoy moving in my own unique way and know that I am always doing my best. I noticed that we all looked so different when moving and that this is a beautiful thing!
How would you describe the sense of community in Dance Fitness classes?
It’s wonderful. Everyone is so supportive and welcoming. Even though I was shy at first, I’ve come to feel very comfortable. There’s a sense that we’re all in it together, and that’s really special.
Have you made connections or friendships through the class? How has that influenced your experience?
I’ve definitely made some connections. It’s nice to see familiar faces each week and share a laugh. It’s made the class something I look forward to, not just for the exercise but also for the company.
Do you have a favorite memory or moment from any of the classes?
Not a favourite moment, but I do enjoy how Jenn makes us laugh during the classes. It’s a reminder not to be overly serious and to enjoy the moment!
Have you noticed any changes in how you approach movement or fitness outside of class?
Absolutely. I’ve become more mindful about how I move during the day, especially at work. Since I’m standing a lot, I think of Jenn reminding us to let our head float on top of our necks and to soften our knees when upright. I also stretch my legs more frequently at work. The moves we do in class have also been great for my shoulders, which can get stiff from knitting.
How have Dance Fitness classes impacted other areas of your life, like work, hobbies, or even relationships?
The biggest change is how much happier I feel. I’ve noticed that I’m less stiff and more comfortable in my body, which makes everything—from work to walking to my knitting—more enjoyable. It’s also given me a confidence boost and makes me feel good about myself.
How do you feel after class?
I feel amazing! My body feels looser and lighter, and I’m always in a better mood. I feel like I have a little spring in my step! It’s such a great way to reset and recharge.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about joining but feels a bit nervous or hesitant?
I’d tell them to give it a try. It’s okay to feel nervous, but you’ll quickly realize that no one is judging you – everyone is really focused on their own experience. The classes are fun, welcoming, and a great way to take care of yourself. You might surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it!
