A portrait of Jennifer

Today, after my Nia class at Hart House, I wandered over to Queen’s Park Circle where Word on the Street (a festival that celebrates reading and promotes literacy) was happening.

What a stunning day – this morning started off with heavy rain, thunder and lightening, but fortunately for the festival, the sun was shining and the crowds were taking in the buzz of literary activity.

photo 1Fortunately for me, I was asked if I’d like to make a donation to the Toronto Public Library, in exchange for a “portrait” of me written by someone. I loved the idea, and was happy to make a donation to TPL as a former employee and frequent user (yup, I worked there part time from 1986-1988!).  Also, the activity gave me a brilliant idea for using creative writing with the folks I teach Nia / creative movement to through the Living Through the Arts Program (which is part of the Royal Conservatory).

I was pleased to learn that it was Shawn Micallef (a Toronto-based journalist) who would be writing my “portrait” after interviewing me. From all that I’ve read of his work, and heard from him in the media, he seemed like a really interesting guy. Now I know that, in addition to being a skilled journalist, he is an incredibly kind and friendly person.

His time and talent and graciousness made me feel incredibly recognized and grateful for the goodness of humanity.

Thank you, Shawn.
